San Juan, La Union – Top 3 Reasons why it is an Ultimate Dream Destination

La Union or ELYU is a place in the Philippines. If you know or have been to this place, then you probably could think plenty of good reasons to go here, but I am giving my best three according to my 1-day/overnight stay specifically in San Juan.

1. It is the surfing capital of the Nothern Philippines

Over the years, people are discovering the big waves that La Union is most famous for. You should surf at Urbiztondo beach, one of the top surfing spots in the Philippines! Despite the title and recognition given to this place, they still offer cheap surf lessons. For as low as 400 php, you already got yourself a surfing board and an instructor to teach you for an hour. How cool is that?

Did I mention that the top surf school in the Philippines is located in San Juan, La Union? Yes it is. Filipino-Australian professional surfer, Luke Landrigan owns it. So if you’re surfing for the first time, maybe it’s the best place to learn.

Experience bigger waves if you come here between November to March during its peak season. La Union is known as a surfing spot. But other than that, I find it as a great place to disconnect from the stressful city life. You can get inexpensive rental rooms and houses along the beach. My advice is to choose a place located in a non-surfing area and you get to enjoy that exclusivity you long for.

2. It’s a great place for food lovers

Feeling hungry after surfing? Great! Now it’s time to experience and explore the food scene in San Juan, La Union which actually surprised me. Food is not a problem here because there are many establishments selling food. I mean, great food. Apart from surfing, this one is something that tourists must look forward to. Warning: THEY HAVE EXTREMELY DELICIOUS FOOD HERE.

Since it’s almost impossible for me to survive a day without coffee, we started our food hunting activity by looking for the best coffee. And yes, we found it!

El Union

Drinks are great and will only cost you 100 – 150 php. Although the place is small, I liked the chill vibe brought by the cafe interior design, good music, and excellent service! Of course, I’m not forgetting the drinks. Oh Man, they offer really good-tasting coffee! If I would have my own cafe in the future, I want it to be like El Union, just bigger.

Mad Monkeys

Craving for burger and fries while in La Union? No problem! Mad monkeys will surely handle your cravings by serving you extremely delicious and big-sized burgers. I ordered Bbq bacon burger for 295 php and it was worth it! After one burger, I felt like I became a mad monkey craving for more. That’s how good it is!

Olas Banditos

Mexican food, streetstyle art, and homey vibe. These are the main things you shall expect in this place. During lunchtime, you’ll see a long line of people buying their food here. The waiting time is tolerable anyway and the food is great, so it’s totally fine I guess. Try their Carne Asada Burrito for 275 php only!

There are so much more to see in San Juan. More places that will surely satisfy the foodie in you. Hashtag foodporn. I wish I had more time to visit each place.

Nightlife in ELYU is active, I must say. If you’re into that, just look for Flotsam & Jetsam Hostel since you’ll find most of the bars nearby. Just explore and remember not to drink more than you can. ELYU is a nice place, let’s keep it that way.

3. It has the perfect spot for sunset viewing

This has to be my favorite reason. I’ve been to places and have witnessed many sunsets. But I’ve never seen it the way I saw it in La Union. It was dreamy and perfect. During that time, I was not a traveler. I was fully human who is fascinated by the beauty of nature created by God. I never felt so alive. So far, it’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever encountered in 2018. Thanks ELYU!
